Learning is at the heart of everything we do at this school and we are dedicated to providing a creative and innovative learning environment for our pupils.
The High Hazels curriculum is planned by our teaching team in order to meet the needs of our children. Our aspiration is for all children to learn well, make excellent progress and leave the academy equipped with reading, writing and mathematics skills that help them excel in their future learning at secondary school and beyond.
We expect our children to become confident and articulate speakers and so our curriculum is full of opportunities for speaking and listening. Our children debate and discuss, use drama, contribute to presentations and work collaboratively to develop their mastery of the spoken word. Good learners read well and they read widely and often. This means that there is a heavy emphasis in our curriculum on the development of reading. Our children read as part of most lessons and we use synthetic phonics to teach early decoding, reading and spelling skills. Children read out loud and are read to, and our core literacy scheme is underpinned by Read Write Inc materials.
Spelling, punctuation and grammar are taught individually and also included in all English lessons.
Here at High Hazels, we have created a new guided reading system. We are focusing on questioning, comprehension and vocabulary based on high quality texts. The children are really enjoying the new system and are now using a range of vocabulary that they have learnt from books.
Our wider curriculum offer is compliant with the National Curriculum and develops learning through engaging and exciting themes. The curriculum is skills-based and allows children to progress at their own pace. History, geography, art and design are taught thematically, and science, PE, computing and RE are all taught as separate subjects. All children in Key Stage 2 learn a modern foreign language – we have chosen Spanish at High Hazels due to its increasing importance as the language of commerce in the modern world.
Our curriculum is enriched by visits and visitors, allowing children to develop their knowledge of their local area, take advantage of the opportunities for learning within Sheffield as a city and develop greater knowledge and understanding of the wider world and their rights and responsibilities as British citizens. We seek to tap the potential of our children through a carefully tailored approach to meeting their needs as learners.
At High Hazels we are creating responsible, tolerant and increasingly skilled learners, ready for the next chapter in their educational future.
