READ ALL ABOUT IT! High Hazels Academy hosts ‘StorySlam’
The power of prose was celebrated at Sheffield’s High Hazels Academy when it hosted ‘StorySlam’ on Monday 4th February.
Organised by academy sponsor United Learning, the regional heat saw High Hazels competing against other UL primary schools including Worsbrough Bank End and Hunningley, both from Barnsley and Manchester based Cravenwood and Abbey Hey.
As part of the event, pupils from each of the schools took part in creative writing workshops during the morning, before producing their own stories. The best ones were then read out during the afternoon, with a panel of judges including High Hazels’ Headteacher Asma Maqsood-Shah picking a winner.
Taking top spot were Abbey Hey, with High Hazels’ Maryam Chowdhury from Year 5 being named runner-up.
Commented Mrs Maqsood-Shah:
“As a school committed to delivering an education with character, we provide a breadth of opportunities and experiences which seek to make school an enjoyable, fun and exciting experience. StorySlam is a perfect example of this, encouraging our pupils to express themselves through writing, as well as giving them the opportunity to interact with children from other United Learning schools.”

EDUCATION WITH CHARACTER
United Learning schools, including High Hazels Academy, believe that there is more to an excellent education than solely academic success. They therefore aim to develop character, compassion and service in their pupils. United Learning calls this Education with Character, #EducationwithCharacter.
