Spring 1 Week 2 - Senses

This week Acorns have been focusing on our senses. We have done a wide range of activities around the sense "touch".

The children have explored wet paint on their feet, they enjoyed standing and stamping in the different colours and making marks whilst moving.

We have also been exploring with our hands and making our own creations with cloud dough and playdough.

Next week we will be focusing on "taste".

Spring 1 Week 1 - All about me

This week The Acorns have been looking at all about me, we have been making faces using paper plates and the children have been able to choose their own features to use on their plate. The children have taken part in a matching game where the children have had a chance to make faces using different photos, it was an opportunity for the children to make their own choices.

We have made a display about our senses and we are going to be focusing on all our senses throughout this half term, we are going to be looking at taste, touch, see, hear and smell.

Autumn 2 Blog Week 7

During this Autumn half term, Acorns and Nursery have been learning about ‘Seasons’. Within this they have explored topics such as ‘Autumn’, ‘Day and Night’ animals and ‘Christmas’.

As part of the topic about Autumn and Day and Night animals, the children have enjoyed participating in exploring autumn colours, going on an autumn walk in the yard and making autumn pictures with leaves. We have read stories linked to the topic such as ‘Going on a bear hunt’ and ‘Owl babies’ and enjoyed joining in activities linked to the story. In literacy sessions we have practised sequencing the stories using ‘first, next and last’, looked at how to correctly hold and turn pages in books and wrote letters to the mother owl. During Maths sessions, we have learnt to recite and recognise numbers to 5, to match quantity to number and focused on activities based on the four basic shapes ‘square’, ‘rectangle’, ‘triangle’ and ‘circle’. We also enjoyed having a visit from the Owls and had the wonderful opportunity to hold and take a picture with the baby Owl.

During the topic of Christmas, we have enjoyed Christmas crafts which have included decorating and writing cards for family and friends, making snow penguin pictures and snowflakes on the creative table and dressing up like elves, wrapping presents for Santa. We look forward to our visit from Santa next week.  From all of the children in Acorns and Nursery we wish you a very merry christmas and a happy new year!

Autumn 2 Week 6 - Making Christmas Cards

This week Acorns have been finishing off our Christmas cards and calendars. We have also been making gifts for our family using salt dough to cast our hands as a keep sake. The children have had fun feeling the texture of the dough and we are waiting for them to dry so we can decorate them. The children have enjoyed playing and exploring in flour with glitter to look like snow. The children have enjoyed mark making in the flour using their hands which has shown they are using their fine motor skills.

Top Tips For Teeth

Dental decay in children can lead to pain, infections and difficulty with eating, sleeping and socialising. It is the most common reason children aged 5-9 are admitted to hospital.  Here are some ways to keep your child’s teeth healthy

  •  Children need help brushing their teeth until they are at least 7 years old to make sure they are brushing properly.  Helping them will introduce them to good dental habits that will last a lifetime
  • Brush teeth twice a day, once before bed and once at any other time that suits your routine.
  • Use fluoride toothpaste. Toothpaste that contains 1350-1500ppm fluoride gives teeth the best protection
  • Spit don’t rinse. Brushing teeth with toothpaste provides a protective layer of fluoride. If you rinse your mouth with water after brushing you wash it away. Spitting after brushing is fine.
  • Be Sugar Smart . Many children and adults are eating too much sugar. Visit the change 4 life website for suggestions on how to reduce sugar . www.nhs/change4life
  • Swap sugary drinks. Try sugar free, diet or no added sugar drinks BUT plain water or lower fat milks are best.
  • Register with a dentist. To find an NHS dentist visit www.nhs.uk/service- search
  • Visit your dentist as often as your dentist recommends. Talk to your dentist about fluoride varnish for your child. Remember dental care is free for children

Autumn 2 Week 4 - Owl Puppets

This week the acorns have been continuing to focus on owls, we have been playing with the small world tray and introduced puppets to reenact story of the Owl babies. We have also enjoyed painting this week to promote our fine motor skills, the children have enjoyed experimenting with a range of colours of their own choice.
