Its the end of Autumn 2 term 😊 Let’s see what’s been happening in Y3…………………….

Year 3 have had a fantastic half term full of learning, creativity and fun. We are so proud of the children for the way in which they have continued to try their best in all aspects of the curriculum.

History

During this half term, the children have been learning all about prehistoric Britain. In this topic, we explored the Stone Age, Iron Age and Bronze Age. As Historians, we examined different images and identified artefacts that help archaeologist learn all about the past. Also, we explored the different lifestyles of people from this era including how they searched for food through hunting, gathering, and farming.

Writing

This half-term in writing, we have been reading a portal story called ‘The Stone Age Boy’ by Satoshi Kitamura. During this unit, the children learnt all about the structure and features of a fictional narrative by using a story mountain. From this, the children were able to create a first-person portal story where they ended up during the time of the dinosaurs focusing on using direct speech.

Science

In science we have been learning all about light. This unit has been packed with practical experiments and investigations where the children have explored different aspects of light. We learnt that objects that emit light are called a light source, and objects that reflect light are not a light source. Through an experiment, we discovered that some materials reflect light better than other; the children really enjoyed this day!

D & T

In D & T, we have created picture frames as the children have been exploring free-standing structures. First, we looked at different products that are designed with a free-standing structure and how they are sturdy. Then, we investigated the best way to make our frames stable and the best adhesives to use. After that, we finally got to design and make our very own free-standing picture frames. This was so much fun!

After-school Clubs:

The children have really loved being part of the after-school clubs available to them. We have had some very excited children for Art Club, Science Club, Sports Club and Dance Club. We hope to see the same enthusiasm in the clubs for next half term!

We hope the children have a well-deserved rest over the Christmas holidays, and we look forward to welcoming them back for a new term of learning where we will be exploring all new topics.

See you soon,

Year 3 team.

Its the end of Autumn 2 term 😊 Let’s see what’s been happening in Y3…………………….

Its the end of Autumn 2 term 😊 Let’s see what’s been happening in Y5…………………….

Year 5 have had a fantastic half term, through exploring world trade in geography to writing the next chapter in our story Hugo Cabret! Well done.

Writing:

In Writing, we have been learning about conjunctions and descriptive language used to create atmosphere and tension in a narrative chapter text. We have also been writing our own interesting explanation texts about our chosen subject using background knowledge and research from our chrome books.

Geography:

From the palm trees of Jamaica to the UK, our new topic has been all about World Trade. First, we the countries and climate needed to grow bananas and where they come from. Next, we discussed how bananas are traded around the world and imported into the UK. We ended this unit by debating the pros and cons of buying Fair Trade products.

Art:

This half term, children explored all about Roman and Greek mosaics. First, we used our chrome books to research how mosaics were made and the materials used. Then we chose a design to make our class project. We planned out our design and each made an individual tile that when put together formed a piece of art.

Maths:

In Maths we have been looking at multiplication and division, using out knowledge of place value to multiply and divide by 10, 100 and 1000.

We have also learnt how to calculate the perimeter of different shapes.

After-school Clubs:

The children have really loved being part of the after-school clubs available to them. We have had some very excited children for Calligraphy club, choir, cricket club and participating in a dodgeball tournament. We hope to see the same enthusiasm in the clubs for next half term!

Y5 choir have been busy this half term performing for the mayor and at our lantern parade.

The Year 5 team have thoroughly enjoyed teaching Year 5 this half term and it has been wonderful to see so many children dedicated and excited for their learning and making good progress.

We look forward to welcoming all children back after half term to enjoy another 6 weeks of new learning and experiences.

See you soon,

Year 5 Team.

Its the end of Autumn 2 term 😊 Let’s see what’s been happening in Y2…………………….

Year 2 have had a successful Autumn term where they have really settled back into school and making progress with their learning.

Through our topic ‘Mini Mappers”, we have learnt all about Maps and scales, we have also investigated weather patterns in Darnall.  We created a map of our classroom to scale and created a around the classroom.  We used the compass points to give directions. We really enjoyed our learning.

In English, we have been using the text Proudest blue.  We have explored the language used and used the beautiful pictures to describe the setting of the picture. We wrote our own personal narratives. We also studied a story called “Lubna’s Pebble”; this text was all about a young refugee who had a pebble for a best friend. During our reading lessons we have been reading short texts that we are learning to read fluently and then answering questions about the text.

In phonics, we have been learning all our Set 2 and 3 sounds. We have been finding our sounds in words and practising reading our words quickly without sounding them out. We have all done our Phonics screening check. Well done Year 2, for working so hard on your phonics.

In Maths, we have finished learning about Place Value. We are now learning addition and subtraction. Starting off by looking at patterns when adding and subtracting and then we started to look at adding and subtracting 1s and 10s to a number.

In Design & Technology, we have been learning about food, we had to make a healthy pizza. We researched different bases, designed, and made a pizza. After the making process we evaluated our pizza’s.

In computing, we have learnt all about Information Technology around us. We also learnt how to resize objects on a computer. It was quite tricky but we did it.

The Year 2 team have really enjoyed teaching year 2 this half term and getting to know their new classes. It has been a successful start to the year, and we are all impressed with the year group’s enthusiasm for learning and determination to do their best.

We wish all of the children a restful break and say Merry Christmas to all of the families that celebrate Christmas.

Well done Year 2.

The Year 2 team.

Its the end of Autumn 2 term 😊 Let’s see what’s been happening in Y1…………………….

Well done Y1 on a superb Autumn term! You have all shown great determination and confidence and the teachers are very proud of you all.

We have really enjoyed reading a range of books such as ‘Stanley’s Stick’ and ‘The Big Book of the U.K.’ We enjoyed learning about the non fiction text and looking at the different parts of the U.K. in detail.

We have enjoyed being scientists this term and observing the seasonal change and how this impacts the weather. We have had a weather chart in our classrooms and have been recording the weather daily. We also spent time researching the four seasons and identifying what we could see happening and changing within the seasons.

In History we have been learning about our family history. We have been using the vocabulary ‘past’ and ‘present’ and understand what they mean. We have also learnt about how our parents and grandparents were born in the past. We have then used these skills to sort pictures of school and toys into past and present and discuss them.

In D.T. we have learnt all about healthy foods and designed a fruit kebab to promote healthy eating. The children really enjoyed the ‘Taster Day’ where they got to eat lots of different fruits and choose their favourites.

Have a wonderful break. We look forward to welcoming the children back for another term of learning!

Its the end of Autumn 2 term 😊 Let’s see what’s been happening in Y4…………………….

Year 4 have enjoyed another successful half term at school, full of learning, creativity and fun. We are proud of the way the children have continued to try their best, follow the new school routines and develop their learning.

We have continued to do lots of learning across different subjects. In History, we have explored the Ancient Mayan civilisation through the vertical concept of Quest for Knowledge. In Reading, we have explored a range of texts including poetry, fictitious information texts about dragons and fantasy stories about Aliens. In Maths, we have been learning about addition, subtraction and measurement. The children always have excellent enthusiasm for their maths learning.

In particular, the children have thoroughly enjoyed our unit on Ancient Mayan Civilisation, where we have explored the Mayan customs and social hierarchy. The children showed great enthusiasm for this, and it has been lovely to hear them contrast their knowledge of Ancient Greek and Egyptian history with this unit. The children did some fantastic learning; exploring what the Ancient Mayans believed, what fantastical inventions they gave to the world and what their cities were like.

In science, we were impressed by the knowledge that the children had on the human body and the digestive system. We have been learning about teeth in different animals and understanding why certain animals have certain teeth like carnivores, omnivores and herbivores. We also devised a digestion model out of items you would have lying around the house. The children greatly enjoyed this day!

In Writing, the children have created some excellent pieces that take inspiration from the book, ‘Dragonolgy.’ We explored some good examples of fictitious information texts and the children had a go at making their own about a dragon sighting. Recently, the children have finished a letter to the ‘author’ of ‘Dragonolgy’, Ernest Drake, telling him all about their exciting new discovery.  The children learnt to write in this format and developed their learning on expanded noun phrases and prepositional phrases.

The Year 4 team have thoroughly enjoyed teaching year 4 this term and we feel that all of the children have grown and progressed with their learning behaviour and determination. It has been a successful term and we are all so proud of the children's ambition and love of learning. It has been fantastic to also take our children for clubs, such as Explorers where they made Christmas Wreaths this week.

We hope the children have a well-deserved rest over the Christmas holidays, and we look forward to welcoming them back for a new term of learning.

See you soon,

Year 4 Team.

Its the end of Autumn 2 term 😊 Let’s see what’s been happening in nursery…………………….

What a busy, fun filled term full of learning we have had in nursery! We started the term off learning about nocturnal animals and had a visit from the Wise Owl Falconry Rescue centre. During this visit we got to watch a barn owl fly across the hall, eat and even got to hold an owl for a photograph!

We have also learnt about how different winter festivals are celebrated. We have learnt all about bonfire night, Diwali, Halloween, and Christmas. We talked about safety around fireworks, made biscuits and firework pictures. For Diwali, we talked about who and how people celebrate it in the community as well at home and made firework biscuits to take home. For Christmas we made cards, calendars, read lots of Christmas stories and decorated a real Christmas tree!

As well as all these celebrations we also continued to explore all areas of nursery with our friends, learning to share and talk about our feelings. As we did this, we developed our confidence in new social situations and started to think about how others may feel. We also enjoyed playing and learning in our outdoor area climbing on the climbing frame, riding the bikes, collecting autumn leaves, and playing games with each other. We are so excited for next term where we will continue to learn and play with our friends! Remember to ask us all about our learning!

Its the end of Autumn 2 term 😊 Let’s see what’s been happening in nursery…………………….

Its the end of Autumn 2 term 😊 Let’s see what’s been happening in Reception…………………….

We have been very busy with our learning this half term. We kicked started our learning this term by covering our ‘Heroes’ topic, where we learnt about the different people in our communities. We drew pictures and spoke about the roles of people such as police officers, fire fighters and doctors. We also looked at the equipment that they need to do their jobs, made this with playdoh and made models of the vehicles that they use like police cars and fire engines. To finish off our 'Heroes' learning, we learnt all about the adventures of 'Supertato' and engaged in a PSED session, focusing on the language of reasoning where we answered the question, 'Who would you rather be, Evil Pea or Supertato?' The children gave lots of great answers including "The evil pea because he gets stuck in the jelly and I'd eat my way out!".

We then moved onto our 'Winter festivals' theme, where we learnt the traditional stories behind Diwali and Christmas and then discovered lots of ways that people celebrate different festivals with their families. To end out Literacy learning, we have loved reading the story 'Stickman'! We have made Stickman characters using lots of different materials and have enjoyed retelling the story using our own story maps and handmade props.

In Maths this term we have been looking at the numbers 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5. We have used different items to show the numbers, worked on recognising the amounts in pictures, and looked at composition using our adding machine!

Its the end of Autumn 2 term 😊 Let’s see what’s been happening in Reception…………………….

Its week 6 😊 Let’s see what’s been happening in Y3…………………….

Over the last few weeks, Year 3 have been reading a book called Stone Age Boy by Satoshi Kitamura. In their Reading lessons, pupils considered how the boy might have been feeling when he fell through a perplexing portal and ended up in the Stone Age. To do this, they completed a Mood Graph to understand the character's emotions at different parts of the story. We are so proud of their work!

Its week 6 😊 Let’s see what’s been happening in Y3…………………….
