Year 2 have made a great start to the year and really settled into Year 2 well. All children have been sensible and are following the new school rules. We have had a successful first half term full of fun, learning and creativity. It has been a wonderful start to the school year.
In phonics, we have been learning all our Set 2 and 3 sounds. We have been finding our sounds in words and practising reading our words quickly without sounding them out. We love embedding our phonics learning through fun games.
In Maths, we have been learning about Place Value. We have looked at number to 100 and we can say how many tens and ones are in a number.
In writing, we have explored haikus, free verse and rhying poems. We also wrote instructions based on a story called “The disgustung sandwich”. We loved following our instructions to make our own disgusting sandwiches (see the picture below) .
In art, we are creating a city scape based on the work of Paul Klee. We are drawing shapes to represent the buildings and colouring in the shapes using crayons. We have been practising our colouring making sure that we stay in the lines and colour in the same direction.
In history, we have been learning about how our local community has changed. We have been investigating how food has developed and changed over three periods of time. We have learnt that a long time ago simple food was grown such as potatoes. We have learnt that during World War Two, food was scarce, and rationing was introduced. We have learnt that in the present day, food is diverse representing the diversity of our community now.
The Year 2 team have really enjoyed teaching year 2 this half term and getting to know their new classes. It has been a successful start to the year, and we are all impressed with the year group’s enthusiasm for learning and determination to do their best.
We look forward to welcoming all children back after half term to carry on with their fantastic learning.
Well done Year 2.
The Year 2 team.
