It has been lovely to welcome the children back after a well-deserved Christmas break. Year 6 have returned with determination, ambition, confidence and motivation and have dived straight back into their learning and into their SATS preparation. We are proud of the way the children have ‘stepped up’ and are showing their hard work in their lessons and with the extra revision that they have done over Christmas and have continued to do throughout the first half of the spring term. Keep it up Year 6!
Across school children have been having a ‘bagel and a book’ in a morning as well as having class, family time in the morning where children get to talk and get to know each other more. In year 6, this has been a nice part of the day where children have found time to relax and refocus. In addition to family time, school has resumed our celebration assemblies. This is a highlight of the week and two children from each class receive a value or a pride award. Every week, the choice (to choose just two children) is difficult as there is so much talent, hard work and ambition in the class. We would like to thank parents and carers. for your support, as for those who are chosen, it is nice to celebrate their success and for you to attend the assembly too.
A highlight for all of the year 6 teachers is playtimes, where we often (the teachers) get involved with the children's games. This term, we have played basketball, football and even some rugby at lunchtime on the yard. The children display some great teamwork skills and sportsmanship, and it is a pleasure to join in (or play against them) at one of their favourite parts of the day.
In this spring term, we have begun lots of new learning and topics. In History, we have a started learning about WW2, specifically looking at the impact the war had on Sheffield. We have covered a range of areas such as The Blitz, evacuation, and the role of women during the war. Despite it being a new topic, the children have shown a wealth of knowledge and a passion for learning and discovering mor about the role Sheffield had to play in one of the greatest wars in history.
We have also continued to offer a range of clubs including debating, multi-sports and journalism club. One of our most popular clubs this half term has been Journalism club. The children have been able to immerse themselves as journalist and learn how to write in a newspaper and reporting style and genre. They have also been reporting on the playtime activities!
In particular, the children thoroughly enjoyed our trip to crucial crew. The day consisted of a coach trip to Rotherham life centre, followed by a series of workshops run by the local police and fire team. One highlight of the workshops was a mock trial court case in a magistrate's course. This enabled Year 6 to understand and witness what being in a court would feel like and all the different roles involved. Not only did they have the chance to observe a mock trail, but they also learnt about, bus safety, fire safety and road safety. Hopefully, our eye-opening, educational day at Crucial crew has shown us some ways in which we can keep ourselves and other safe outside of school, especially as the children begin to think about moving to secondary school.
The Year 6 team have thoroughly enjoyed teaching Year 6 this half term and we have loved seeing the children grow in their determination and effort towards their SATS. We are, as always, incredibly proud of the children and are excited to start back after half term for the last 6 weeks of spring. We hope the pupils and their families have a safe, relaxing break.
See you soon,
Year 6 Team.
