We have finished Autumn 1 Term - Lets see what's been happening in Y3..............

In year 3, we have made a fantastic start to the year. We have adapted well to the new school rules and routines and talked lots about keeping ourselves and our friends safe.

Through our topic, ‘The Stone Age to the Iron Age’ we have done lots of fun and exciting learning across different subjects. In History, we have enjoyed learning about Stone Age, Bronze Age and Iron Age. We explored the artefacts used in these eras and talked in depth about the lifestyle of these people including where they lives, the food they hunted and gathered and their way of life.

In writing, we have produced stories from the Iron Age and published these for our friends in year 2. The children have planned their stories thinking about the setting, problem and solution including expanded non phrases and various sentence starters within their sentences. We have enjoyed two stories called The Stone Age boy and The Pebble in my pocket.

In reading, we have enjoyed looking at poems, diary extracts and non-fiction texts where we have identified and clarified new vocabulary, inferred from the text and generated ideas for acting out the script including drawing story maps to support this. The children have also enjoyed being the character and hot seating.

In Art, we learnt about Edith Holden who was a British artist in the late 1800 and mainly painted pictures of plants and animals. The children learnt to draw lines and flowers including shading.

In computing, we have talked about ways to stay safe when using the internet in our e-safety lessons. We looked at different scenarios and discussed who we need to speak to if we feel unsafe or are being contacted by strangers online.

In Science, we have completed a unit of work all about rocks. We have learnt about how rocks are useful and how they are formed. We have investigated, using our scientific skills, to find out about the permeability of different soil types.

The Year 3 team have thoroughly enjoyed teaching year 3 this half term and getting to know their new classes. It has been a successful start to the year, and we are all impressed with the year group’s enthusiasm for learning and determination to do their best.

We look forward to welcoming all children back after half term to enjoy another 7 weeks of new learning and experiences.

See you soon,

Year 3 Team.

Dear Parents/Carers

As I write to you on the final day of this half term, I am filled with gratitude and pride for all our staff and pupils. They have worked so hard this term to get back on track with all learning. Our staff have created bespoke catch-up plans to ensure that no child is left behind because of the pandemic. I will be sending you more information after half term about these plans, including our continuity of learning.

All our pupils have settled into school really well and have impressed all of us with their confidence and ability to manage their learning with all the current restrictions. I have already noticed brilliant progress in children’s books. This is a credit to our pupils’ exceptional learning behaviours and determination to do well at school. We look forward to sharing your child/ren’s progress next half term.

I would like to thank all our parents/carers for their continued support, and timely communication that has been invaluable to us in the safe running of the school. Here at High Hazels Academy, we are all looking forward to the start of another amazing term, full of learning achievements, joy and progress.

Have a restful half term break.

Yours sincerely

Mrs A Maqsood-Shah

Its Week 7 - Lets see what's been happening in Y3..............

This week we have been looking at how to use apostrophes and correct punctuation in our writing. We have followed the journey of a pebble from in the depths of a volcano 480 million years ago. In reading, we have journeyed through the different stages of the Stone Age and how they lived. In maths, we have been looking at using place value and number lines to add 3 digit and 1 digit numbers by crossing the tens. In art, we enjoyed drawing different types of flowers inspired by Edith Holden, looking at lines, shapes and detail. In history, we made our own Stone Age weapons and tools from materials we found outside to experience what it would have been like.

10 Day Active Challenge Starting 12th October

Dear Parent / Carer,

Our school will be taking part in the 10 day Active Travel Challenge starting on Monday 12th and finishing on Friday 23rd October 2020.

The challenge is for pupils & their families to choose an active way of getting to school over the 10 day period. The challenge is also open to school staff and we will be making every effort to take part too.

Walking, cycling, skating, scooting and park & stride are all active ways of travelling and we hope by taking part in the challenge it will:

  • Improve health & wellbeing of our pupils & their families
  • Encourage pupils and families to be more active
  • Reduce congestion and parking problems around our school
  • Improve air quality around school

Please be aware if you live a long way from school and need to drive you can still take part by parking away from school (at least a 5 minute walk) and walking the last part of your journey, this is called Park & Stride.

We are competing against schools from across South Yorkshire so we really do need your help. Please do your best to be active on your journey to school and help us complete the challenge.
