Free Maths App

Dear Parents and Carers,

This is a great app to help your child develop their maths skills. It is free to use and helps children practise addition and subtraction. It is aimed at children aged 4 - 7, but could be beneficial to KS2 children too. A few minutes on this app each day will help your child to progress in maths.

If you have any questions, please ask your child's teacher.

Kind regards,

End of Term Newsletter

Dear Parents/Carers

Please click here to view the end of term newsletter.

It has been a challenging, enjoyable and very productive half term at high Hazels. Reflecting on what we have done and achieved thus far, fills me with pride and humility to be part of such an amazing staff team who all work hard together for the better of all our pupils and to serve our supportive community. We have completed our end of term assessments for all year groups where our pupils have demonstrated the fantastic progress gained in this Autumn term. Well done to all our pupils, their determination and resilience is commendable.

This half term tarted with our annual High Hazels Lantern Parade on the 5th of November, and I am sure you will agree with me that it was a resounding success. For this I am grateful to all the local councillors Mary Lea and Zahida Naz, South Yorkshire police, Darnall Well-Being, Sheffield Park Academy, Local youth clubs and our fantastic PTA. The success of this event is due to the meticulous planning of our school leaders, creativity of our pupils and the support of all the mentioned groups and organisation, without whom this event would not be possible.

As always, our pupils have received a full complement of an exciting curriculum and enrichment offer including theatre visits, inter school sports tournaments, after school clubs, Reception Christmas singalong, swimming offer to Years 3 and 4, end of term parties, Christmas jumper and Children in need fund raising events, just to list a few.

This half term we have been able to restart our face-to-face parental engagement offers cautiously and carefully such as: family learning, toddler group, coffee morning, reading workshops, weekly achievement assemblies, PTA meetings, parent consultation meetings.

How you can help us next term:

  1. We need parent volunteers to support or free breakfast offer for all pupils.  From January all our pupils will receive a free breakfast bagel in the morning as part of our commitment to ensure all pupils have a great start to their learning day with a healthy breakfast. To this end I am reaching out to all of our parents to ask for parent volunteers to support us in the mornings in preparing this breakfast. You can volunteer for 1 hour for any day in the week. If you or anyone in your family has the capacity to support us with this than please speak to your child’s class teacher.
  2. We need a parent working group to consider our Relationships Health and Sex Education curriculum consultation. If you are a parent and would like to be part of this working party, then please contact the school office, and let us know. The group will begin their work/consultation with myself in January week beginning 10th of January. I am hoping to be able to go out to full parent body consultation by the end of January in order to complete the consultations by February half term. This will then allow the RHSE policy to be ratified and in place from March 2022.

Finally I would like to thank all our pupils, staff, governors and parents for their continued support and efforts.

Wishing all our school communities a Happy New Year and a very merry festive season.

Yours sincerely

Mrs A Maqsood-Shah

Principal

Its the end of Autumn 2 term 😊 Let’s see what’s been happening in Reception…………………….

We have been very busy with our learning this half term. We kicked started our learning this term by covering our ‘Heroes’ topic, where we learnt about the different people in our communities. We drew pictures and spoke about the roles of people such as police officers, fire fighters and doctors. We also looked at the equipment that they need to do their jobs, made this with playdoh and made models of the vehicles that they use like police cars and fire engines. To finish off our 'Heroes' learning, we learnt all about the adventures of 'Supertato' and engaged in a PSED session, focusing on the language of reasoning where we answered the question, 'Who would you rather be, Evil Pea or Supertato?' The children gave lots of great answers including "The evil pea because he gets stuck in the jelly and I'd eat my way out!".

We then moved onto our 'Winter festivals' theme, where we learnt the traditional stories behind Diwali and Christmas and then discovered lots of ways that people celebrate different festivals with their families. To end out Literacy learning, we have loved reading the story 'Stickman'! We have made Stickman characters using lots of different materials and have enjoyed retelling the story using our own story maps and handmade props.

In Maths this term we have been looking at the numbers 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5. We have used different items to show the numbers, worked on recognising the amounts in pictures, and looked at composition using our adding machine!

Its the end of Autumn 2 term 😊 Let’s see what’s been happening in Reception…………………….

Christmas Jumper Day 10th December 2021

Dear Parents/Carers,

On Friday 10th December we are taking part in Save the Children’s Christmas Jumper Day.

Children will be able to come to school wearing a winter themed jumper. This could be one bought in the shops, or made at home. Children could add some tinsel to a jumper they already have. Some children have even made a spotty t-shirt before.

If children want to take part in Christmas Jumper Day, then please use our Just Giving Page. https://christmas.savethechildren.org.uk/fundraising/cjd210018881

You can donate as little or as much as you like on there. Alternatively, you can send £2 to school Friday 10th December. All money raised will go to Save the Children, making sure every child, no matter where they’re born, has essentials like food and water, healthcare, education, protection and shelter.

Its week 4 😊 Let’s see what’s been happening in Reception…………………….

This week we have been busy in Maths learning about shapes, circles and triangles in particular. We have learnt that they have properties which identify them, like how many sides and vertices they have. We have also been on a shape hunt outside to find circles and triangles in the environment. This is a fun activity to try at home or in the supermarket too. We have been continuing our learning around the story ‘Supertato’ in literacy, writing list of qualities we would like in our very own superhero sidekicks. We have enjoyed a P4C lesson where we posed the question ‘Do you have to have powers to be a hero?’ We got some very interesting answers like “No because a policeman keeps everyone safe”. This week we also hosted our reading and phonics parent workshop, thank you to everyone who attended and we hope you enjoyed it.

Its week 4 😊 Let’s see what’s been happening in Reception…………………….
