Parent's Evening Consultations

Dear Parent/Carer

To build on the success of our last term’s online Parent Teacher Consultation meetings, we will be holding an online virtual parent consultation meeting via School Cloud. These will take place on 6th-7th of July for FS2-Y6 pupils and for nursery children 7th & 9th July. This allows you to choose your own appointment time. Once you have booked your appointment you will receive a confirmation email.

Appointments can be made from today at 4pm and will close on Wednesday 7th July. Should you wish to make any changes after this date please contact the school office.

To support you with using this relatively new system of booking we have attached a short video and crib sheet, which you can access via this link here https://vimeo.com/473882995 You can also access this information on our school website https://www.highhazelsacademy.org.uk/parents-and-community/school-cloud-parents-evening

10 Day Active Challenge 14th June - 25th June

Dear Parents/Carers

Our school will be taking part in the 10 day Active Travel Challenge starting on Monday 14th and finishing on Friday 25rd June 2021.

The challenge is for pupils & their families to choose an active way of getting to school over the 10 day period. During the challenge each classroom will have a wall chart on which pupils who have travelled actively will record their journey. Those pupils with 10 stickers on the chart at the end of the 10 day challenge will be awarded a prize.

Walking, cycling, skating, scooting and park & stride are all active ways of travelling and we hope by taking part in the challenge it will:

  • Improve health & wellbeing of our pupils & their families
  • Encourage pupils and families to be more active
  • Reduce congestion and parking problems around our school
  • Improve air quality around school
  • Promote active travel for the journey to school and for families to continue to do this after the challenge!

Summer Term Newsletter

Dear Parents/Carers

We have had another busy half term packed with events and successes, including our most recent Eid-ul-Fitr parties. We have made fantastic gains in learning with all our pupils regardless of their starting point. I have been particularly impressed with our pupils’ strong and positive behaviours for learning and determination to do well in all their learning. This half term the staff have run 26 different clubs free to all our pupils across the school. These extra-curricular activities included: arts, sports, music, cooking, funky fingers, and mindfulness to name a few. We will be running a new range of after school clubs again next half term. Please continue to sign up your child/ren for these clubs as they play an integral part in our offer of ‘Education with Character’.

I am really looking forward to next half term and to having all our pupils back in school. The final half term of the academic year is always packed with events celebrating the successes of our pupils amongst other events. Teachers will be holding another round of parent consultation meeting to share your child/ren’s progress over the year. Our admin and pastoral team will be able to support you in setting up those online meetings if you haven’t yet attended one.

Please click her to view our newsletter in full

Finally, thank you all for your continued support and encouragement.

We have finished Summer 1 Term - Lets see what's been happening in Y6..............

Year 6 have had a wonderful start the the summer term. We began by immersing ourselves in our ‘Battle for Equality’ topic by separating the children based on their age. 10-year-olds experienced a fun-filled morning of exercise videos, music with instruments, word searches, games and positive treatment by their teachers. In contrast, the 11-year-olds were expected to stretch in silence, listen to and watch the other children enjoying their music lesson and write lines. We wanted to highlight how inequality can make people feel and provoke an emotional response to this unfair treatment (and that’s just what we did!). The children, both 10 and 11 years old, were outraged by the unfair treatment and our morning ended with a mock protest for fairness.

Since then, we have explored this theme in more depth, looking at the collapse of the British Empire, the lives and contributions of Ghandi, Mandela, Parks and King as well as looking at and debating whether the world has achieved equality today. We have found it extremely interesting, and it has really opened our eyes to the world around us.

In art, we have been learning about the impressionist painter, Paul Cezanne. We have researched his life and have analysed his style of painting before planning and creating a final piece, imitating his use of complementary colours and constructive brushstrokes. We are very proud of our final pieces and have celebrated and evaluated them in a class gallery

Our learning in maths has also been fantastic. We started the half term off by learning how to solve problems involving ratio and proportion. This really developed our problem-solving skills and consolidated our understanding of fractions and multiplication to solve these problems. We have then revisited some key concepts from earlier in the year to ensure that we have a strong foundation in mathematical fluency before we move to year 7. We are looking forward to consolidating our learning in written methods, multi-step problem solving and fractions next half term.

We have also made lots of progress in writing and have enjoyed writing biographies, focusing on building cohesion within and across paragraphs. We wrote biographies about fictional characters, which provided us with the opportunity to use our creativity in a non-fiction writing style.  We have then learnt and innovated a narrative called The Island and have enjoyed developing characters and using dialogue to convey their thoughts and feelings.

Once again, we are extremely proud of our Year 6 pupils who have put maximum effort into their learning this half term and their progress is really showing. Well done, Year 6 and we can’t wait to enjoy our last half term with you at High Hazels.

We have finished Summer 1 Term - Lets see what's been happening in Y6..............

Its Week 4 - Lets see what's been happening in Y6..............

This week in art, we have planned our final piece in the style of Cezanne.  We have chosen to create either a still life or a landscape image and have thought about how we will use our knowledge of tint, tone and shade to create light and shadows as well as where we will use pairs of complementary colours.  We cannot wait to start painting our final pieces next week.
