Its the end of Autumn 1 term 😊 Let’s see what’s been happening in Y4…………………….

Year 4 have made a great start to the year and we are proud of the way they have adapted to the school rules and routines. We have had a successful first half term full of fun, learning and creativity.

In our English lessons, we have planned both reading and writing meticulously to ensure children receive a deeper understanding of the text so that they can produce their own version. We have completed tongue twisters and instructions on how to make Lego models. Furthermore, children have loved ‘The Building Boy’ story and have been using it to make their own adventure story which will include both setting and character descriptions.

In Maths, children have been using their place value knowledge to round numbers to the nearest 10, 100 and 1000 as well as compare and order four-digit numbers. Their tenacity and resilience in maths is outstanding and we really look forward to teaching them new concepts.

In Geography, the children have made an excellent start learning about map reading: we have used an eight-point compass and learnt how lines of longitude and latitude can help us find places. We have also loved finding out about Brazilian culture and what it’s like to live there.

In Science, we have been learning about how to classify plants and animals into groups. This has meant children have got to terms with terminology such as vertebrate and invertebrate.  Children have had lots of fun classifying both the animals and plants they see around school.

In particular, the children have really enjoyed our creative Art lessons. They have learned new skills such as stippling, hatching, cross-hatching, and smudging to shade. They have spent time practising these skills on still life and animals, using the work of eminent artist, Edith Holden, as inspiration.

We have now finished our class book, ‘Middleworld’ which the children have enjoyed reading in story time. It has been full of new vocabulary, cliff hangers and has helped them to generate ideas for their own drama performances and adventure storiesWithin these stories, they have included effective language features such as expanded noun phrases and adverbials of time.

In PE, we have been swimming every Tuesday at Ponds Forge.  It has been a real highlight of the week to watch the children grow in confidence in the water and learn such an important and crucial life skill. We look forward to carrying this on next half-term.

In P4C, children have been learning about their responsibility within school and how to work as a team together. It has led to great conversations in the classroom amongst the children as they develop their social and emotional skills.

The Year 4 team have thoroughly enjoyed teaching year 4 this half term and getting to know their new classes. It has been a successful start to the year, and we are all impressed with the year groups enthusiasm for learning and determination to do their best.

We look forward to welcoming all children back after half term to enjoy another 7 weeks of new learning and experiences.

See you soon,

Year 4 Team.
