Dear Parents/Carers

As I write to you on the final day of this half term, I am filled with gratitude and pride for all our staff and pupils. They have worked so hard this term to get back on track with all learning. Our staff have created bespoke catch-up plans to ensure that no child is left behind because of the pandemic. I will be sending you more information after half term about these plans, including our continuity of learning.

All our pupils have settled into school really well and have impressed all of us with their confidence and ability to manage their learning with all the current restrictions. I have already noticed brilliant progress in children’s books. This is a credit to our pupils’ exceptional learning behaviours and determination to do well at school. We look forward to sharing your child/ren’s progress next half term.

I would like to thank all our parents/carers for their continued support, and timely communication that has been invaluable to us in the safe running of the school. Here at High Hazels Academy, we are all looking forward to the start of another amazing term, full of learning achievements, joy and progress.

Have a restful half term break.

Yours sincerely

Mrs A Maqsood-Shah

We have finished Autumn 1 Term - Lets see what's been happening in Y4..............

Year 4 have made a great start to the year and we are proud of the way they have adapted to the new school rules and routines. We have had a successful first half term full of fun, learning and creativity.

Through our topic ‘A Journey to Brazil’, we have done lots of learning across different subject. We have explored Brazil in geography, reading, writing and in our DT textiles unit. We have loved finding out about Brazilian culture and what it’s like to live there.

In Geography, the children have made an excellent start learning about different climate zones, the geographical regions in Brazil and their human and physical features.

In particular, the children have really enjoyed our creative DT textiles lessons. They have learnt new skills such as tying knots, threading a needle, embroidery, applique, sewing on beads and using templates to make purses and wallets. They have spent time on designing their own purses and wallets in the style of Rio Carnival and we are looking forward to a fashion show once they are complete for the children to show off their wonderful creations.

We have now finished our class book, ‘The Adventures of Edward Tulane’ which the children have enjoyed reading in story time and exploring further in our reading lessons. It has been full of new vocabulary, cliff hangers and has helped them to generate ideas for their own drama performances and adventure stories. Within these stories, they have included effective language features such as expanded noun phrases and adverbials of time. We have published these into our own story books; the children have loved becoming authors and illustrators themselves.

In computing, we have been exploring ways to stay safe online in our e-safety lessons.  We have made posters and discovered ways to do safe and efficient searches. After learning these techniques, the children completed a competitive quiz to see who could find information the fastest online.

The Year 4 team have thoroughly enjoyed teaching year 4 this half term and getting to know their new classes. It has been a successful start to the year, and we are all impressed with the year group’s enthusiasm for learning and determination to do their best.

We look forward to welcoming all children back after half term to enjoy another 7 weeks of new learning and experiences.

We have finished Autumn 1 Term - Lets see what's been happening in Y4..............

Its Week 5 - Lets see what's been happening in Y4..............

This week, Y4 have had so much fun investigating the different leaves growing in our environment. We went on the playground and the field in search of different leaves and recorded our findings. We then drew the different leaves and recorded their characteristics. Next week, we will use this information to create classification keys.

10 Day Active Challenge Starting 12th October

Dear Parent / Carer,

Our school will be taking part in the 10 day Active Travel Challenge starting on Monday 12th and finishing on Friday 23rd October 2020.

The challenge is for pupils & their families to choose an active way of getting to school over the 10 day period. The challenge is also open to school staff and we will be making every effort to take part too.

Walking, cycling, skating, scooting and park & stride are all active ways of travelling and we hope by taking part in the challenge it will:

  • Improve health & wellbeing of our pupils & their families
  • Encourage pupils and families to be more active
  • Reduce congestion and parking problems around our school
  • Improve air quality around school

Please be aware if you live a long way from school and need to drive you can still take part by parking away from school (at least a 5 minute walk) and walking the last part of your journey, this is called Park & Stride.

We are competing against schools from across South Yorkshire so we really do need your help. Please do your best to be active on your journey to school and help us complete the challenge.
