Year 5 have had a half term that was out of this world! We have been on our amazing trip to the space centre and learning how to make bread. We have also been creating mystery stories full of suspense and practicing problem solving using decimal numbers. Everyone has shown some awesome learning and we are very proud of you Y5!
Writing:
In Writing, we have been looking at techniques that authors such as Gary Crew and writers of Goosebumps novels use to create mystery and suspense in their narratives! We have used descriptive language to create atmosphere and tension and parenthesis to add extra detail into our stories. We have also started to explore the features of an informative text to create our own informative web posters next half term.
Science:
Our topic in Science this half term has been forces, wwe started by looking at the different forces found on earth such as gravity, friction, air resistance and water resistance and conducting experiments to measure how much force is acting upon different objects. Next, we investigated how the forces change when our objects have different surface areas.
At the beginning of term, we had a very exciting trip to the Space Centre in Leicester. The children completed a scavenger hunt where they had to find facts about space in the museum. We had a fantastic time from seeing a real space rocket to experiencing a cinematic film in the planetarium.
DT:
This half term, children tasted and researched different types of bread, the nutritional value of bread and how to make bread. After an informative video about hygiene and the importance of washing hands, we are ready to create our loaves of bread after the holidays.
Maths:
In Maths we have been learning about decimals and percentages. We have covered many topics from adding and subtracting decimals to converting between fractions, decimals, and percentages. We have been looking at the real-world applications for this knowledge from calculating bargains at shops and budgeting.
After-school Clubs:
The children have really loved being part of the after-school clubs available to them this half term. We have had some very excited children for cooking club – making breakfast omelettes, pizza bagels and garlic bread, choir have been on an amazing trip and performed at the Sheffield Utilita Arena with 4000 other children, and sport club have continued to build their skills and sportsmanship.
The Year 5 team have thoroughly enjoyed teaching Year 5 this half term and it has been wonderful to see so many children dedicated and excited for their learning and making good progress.
We look forward to welcoming all children back after half term for their last half term in year 5 enjoying new learning and experiences.
See you soon,
Year 5 Team.
