Art

Intent

At High Hazels Academy children explore and develop their skills and creativity using a wide range of media. We value the importance of experimentation, exploration and pushing ideas in imaginative ways.  Through our carefully planned curriculum, we aim to develop and embed key art skills, develop knowledge and show progression by building upon these skills year after year.  We want our pupils to have the opportunity to explore their creativity and to showcase their artwork.

The purpose of Art and Design education is to give pupils the skills, concepts and knowledge necessary for them to express their responses to ideas and experiences in a visual or tactile form. It fires their imagination and is a fundamental means of personal expression.

Implementation

We display around school showing a diverse range of styles, media and cultures.  We showcase the children’s learning in their sketch books which shows the progression of their knowledge and skills gained from the unit of work.

We are committed to providing all children with learning opportunities to engage in Art and Design.  We have carefully designed our own art curriculum, which is closely linked to the National Curriculum, and we focus on a different area of Art and Design each half term.  This is to ensure that the children receive a broad and balanced art curriculum.

Each half term we study an artist in depth focussing on the artistic style, critiquing and evaluating their work and then adapting those key elements and producing work inspired by the artist. Our art focus each half term will be one of the following, drawing, painting, collage, printing, 3D models and textiles.

Our art units of work follows this structure

1: Research artist - create a fact file of artist.

2: WAGOLL (analyse, compare and contrast)

3: Research history of, and explore art skill.

4: Design.

5: Work on final product

6: Evaluate work.

Impact

Children will build upon skills and knowledge each year.  They will become creative learners, who have a web of knowledge about great artist of the world.  Creativity and uniqueness will be celebrated and children will become astute at editing and improving the pieces they have created,  As teachers, there will be an emphasis placed on individuality and children will be given the freedom to explore art using their imaginations.  Children will have embedded the key art and design skills needed to allow them to produce inventive pieces of art.
