PE

Intent

At High Hazels Academy, we follow the ‘GetSet4PE scheme’. We want our children to live healthy, active lifestyles and take with them our chosen concepts for PE which are health, competition, friendship, teamwork, sharing and resilience. Our lessons have progressive activities which are designed to inspire and engage all of our pupils.

Our aims are to increase participation for all children in competitive and physically demanding activity across the school so that our children can have healthier bodies and happier minds. We also aim to develop competence in these activities and ensure the children are physically active for sustained periods of time. We believe this approach allows all of our children to experience a range of sport and physical activities across the year in order to develop their skills. In addition, children are able to show progression within their confidence, competence, control and character.

Implementation

KS1 & KS2 receive two hours of physically demanding activity per week – the first session is delivered by our specialist coaches and the second session is delivered by their class teacher. The children have opportunity to revisit topics throughout their time with us to implement and develop skill from previous years. As part of the physical education curriculum, children in Y3 and Y4 attend swimming lessons for 18 weeks within the school year. As a school, we also take part in an ‘active 10 minutes’ daily. This may include going outside for a run as a class or taking part in ‘body bop’ within the classroom.

Impact

If children are keeping up with the curriculum, they are deemed to be making good or better progress.

In KS1 we monitor their aptitude and confidence across a broad range of activities which encompasses their agility, balance and coordination, on their own within groups.

We teach pupils through class lessons and specialist support to:

  • master basic movements including running, jumping, throwing and catching, as well as developing balance, agility and co-ordination, and begin to apply these in a range of activities
  • participate in team games, developing simple tactics for attacking and defending
  • perform dances using simple movement patterns

In KS2 pupils continue to progress a broader range of skills, learning how to use them in different ways and to link them to make actions and sequences of movement.

We teach pupils through class lessons and specialist support to:

  • use running, jumping, throwing and catching in isolation and in combination
  • play competitive games, modified where appropriate [for example, badminton, basketball, cricket, football, hockey, netball, rounders and tennis], and apply basic principles suitable for attacking and defending
  • develop flexibility, strength, technique, control and balance [for example, through athletics and gymnastics]
  • perform dances using a range of movement patterns
  • take part in outdoor and adventurous activity challenges both individually and within a team
  • compare their performances with previous ones and demonstrate improvement to achieve their personal best

If your child has been active outside of school, please let the office know and bring in their awards / achievements as we would love to celebrate their successes with the High Hazels family.
