Its the end of Spring 1 term 😊 Let’s see what’s been happening in Y6…………………….

It has been lovely to welcome the children back after a well-deserved Christmas break. Year 6 have returned with determination, ambition, confidence and motivation and have dived straight back into their learning and into their SATS preparation. We are proud of the way the children have ‘stepped up’ and are showing their hard work in their lessons and with the extra revision that they have done over Christmas and have continued to do throughout the first half of the spring term. Keep it up Year 6!

Across school children have been having a ‘bagel and a book’ in a morning as well as having class, family time in the morning where children get to talk and get to know each other more. In year 6, this has been a nice part of the day where children have found time to relax and refocus. In addition to family time, school has resumed our celebration assemblies. This is a highlight of the week and two children from each class receive a value or a pride award. Every week, the choice (to choose just two children) is difficult as there is so much talent, hard work and ambition in the class. We would like to thank parents and carers. for your support, as for those who are chosen, it is nice to celebrate their success and for you to attend the assembly too.

A highlight for all of the year 6 teachers is playtimes, where we often (the teachers) get involved with the children's games. This term, we have played basketball, football and even some rugby at lunchtime on the yard. The children display some great teamwork skills and sportsmanship, and it is a pleasure to join in (or play against them) at one of their favourite parts of the day.

Year 5 enjoyed taking snippets of their text and putting the emoticon behind it into a freeze frame. This helped students to infer the meaning or emotion within the book, even if it doesn’t state it clearly. Keep up the hard work, Y5!

This half term, Year 3 have been learning all about French artist, Henri Matisse. They explored examples of his artworks, learnt about his passion as an artist and practiced colour mixing using paints. Today, Year 3 have been practising a variety of different brush strokes to create texture and effect. They tried a dry brush technique, cross-hatching, and dabbing. Check out some of their work

This has been a busy week in nursery! We started our new story 'The wheels on the bus' as part of our 'transport' theme. We have enjoyed making our own buses with junk modelling and painting on big paper. On Tuesday we celebrated Chinese New Year- The year of the tiger. We made decorations to take home and listened to a story all about Chinese New Year. On Wednesday our families got to come into nursery to stay and play with us! We have had a busy, fun filled week!

Year 4 have done some amazing writing this half term. Here are some examples our short stories we wrote based on The Stinky Cheese Man. First, we learnt the original story using actions to help us remember it. We then innovated it and created our own disgustingly, smelly characters. We had a lot of fun writing these silly stories.

We love to problem solve in Y4. We have been using our knowledge of factor pairs to explore the following problem:

Mr Sexton has 36 children in his PE class. He wants to put them in equal groups, how many children could he have in each group?

To help use solve this problem, we worked systematically and used counters to help us investigate.

PTA Sponsor Snowflake Appeal at Sheffield Children's Hospital

High Hazels Academy PTA made an amazing gesture in December and sponsored a snowflake at Sheffield Children’s Hospital.

Over the past seven years, the award-winning snowflake display has raised over £1m for Sheffield Children’s Hospital!

In return for pledging to raise funds, the PTA sees their snowflake sparkle on the Sheffield Children’s Hospital building, with an attached name tag recognising the contribution for all to see.

The initiative brings people together with a shared goal to build a better future for the staff, patients, and their families at Sheffield Children’s Hospital.

This week, Year 3 have been learning all about discussion and the importance of a balanced argument. In their Reading and Writing lessons, they stood the accused wolf, Alexander T Wolf, on trial for murdering the Three Little Pigs. They worked in groups to gather evidence for each side- innocent or guilty. Finally, they debated their arguments until they reached their final verdict - GUILTY!

This week has been an exciting week in school! We have started 'Bagel and a Book', every day when the children come into school they can have a bagel for breakfast and sit with a book. The children in nursery have loved having their bagels for breakfast and looking at a selection of books. We have had a busy week continuing to learn about different types of transport.  The children have been painting pictures of buses, cars, trains and using junk modelling to build these. In maths, we have been describing a sequence of events using words such as ‘first we wake up, then we get dressed,  after that we go to school'. We can't wait for next week when we start our new story all about buses!
